Morning sickness is the classic first sign of pregnancy. “Morning Sickness” is in fact a somewhat misleading name for the condition experienced by approximately 50 to 75 percent of pregnant women at some time during their pregnancy. Morning sickness seems to be more common among women who are carrying two or more children, possibly because they have particularly high levels of estrogen, HCG, and other hormones. Other theories hold that women who don’t get morning sickness are more prone to experience miscarriages. An absence of the reflex might mean that more harmful substances are reaching the fetus, leading to development failure and miscarriage. Eating five or six smaller meals throughout the day rather than the usual 3 meals per day appears to help. It’s not good to let the stomach get too full or too empty. Various food remedies have been recommended, including dry crackers, ginger, lemon, toast and tea, cabbage, bananas, rice, and applesauce (not all at the same time, of course). And it is generally considered harmless and possibly helpful for women to indulge both their cravings and their sensitivities while they are pregnant.

As mentioned, anti-nausea medications are available for extreme morning sickness, though they are quite expensive and generally only recommended for severe cases. For most pregnant women, the nausea and vomiting they experience (commonly known as “morning sickness”) is uncomfortable and inconvenient, but manageable. There are instances, however, when morning sickness can interfere with a woman’s ability to work and function, and it can even be life threatening for both woman and child in the most extreme cases. In these circumstances, it is essential that the expectant mother let her doctor know what is happening and get the situation fully evaluated. Understanding pregnancy nausea and when to call your doctor will give you peace of mind during your pregnancy.

Morning sickness is a “normal” aspect of pregnancy that in most cases will disappear on its own within 12 to 14 weeks—by the end of the first trimester. It presents no danger to the health of either mother or child, and may even be a healthy defense mechanism, protecting the fetus from exposure to certain toxins. It is very likely to lead to serious nutritional deficiencies and metabolic imbalances, and greatly increases the stress that pregnancy places on both mind and body.

Any woman suffering from morning sickness needs to be alert for signs of dehydration that can result from frequent vomiting. If you find that you are urinating less than usual and/or your urine is unusually dark, that is one sign of dehydration. Your skin, eyes, and mucous membranes may feel overly dry and you may experience frequent headaches. Confusion and fatigue may occur as well. In the extreme, dehydration can cause a drop in blood pressure and dizziness. Pregnancy Nausea In Your First Few Weeks

Morning sickness is one of the first and best-known symptoms of pregnancy. Many a woman has visited the doctor with flu-like symptoms, only to learn that her nausea and the accompanying vomiting are not caused by a virus in her system, but by something quite different growing inside. It’s probably not going to be over in a week, either—it’s not uncommon for morning sickness to continue for weeks or even through the first trimester (a long three months).

What exactly causes some women to suffer from morning sickness? (By the way, while morning sickness gets its name because it is most common early in the day, it can happen throughout the day.) During pregnancy, hormonal levels of estrogen and progesterone are rising and fluctuating, and an entirely new kind of hormone called hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) is being produced by the placenta and embryo and circulating into the mother’s system. These hormonal changes are responsible for a lot that is happening within the expectant mother’s body, including slowing down the rate at which food passes through the stomach. They may also cause the overreaction to certain odors that can trigger nausea for many women at this time.

Whatever causes it, morning sickness seems likely to serve some function during pregnancy. Finding The Right Pregnancy Nausea Remedies

For many women, morning sickness is just one of the facts of life that comes along with pregnancy. Most of the 70 to 80 percent of women who experience the intermittent queasiness and vomiting commonly known as morning sickness can expect it to be a relatively brief but unpleasant phase at the beginning of pregnancy. It usually starts at the beginning of pregnancy—notoriously it is one of the very first symptoms for many women—and it generally passes by the end of the third or fourth month. In some cases, however, for reasons that are not clear, an expectant mother will continue to suffer moderate to severe nausea late in pregnancy. It is thought that morning sickness in general is linked to the dramatic fluctuations in a number of different hormones in the mother’s body, and those changes do continue throughout the term. The increasing size of the fetus creates pressure on the stomach and other internal organs, which can also interfere with the digestive process and may explain the continued nausea and food-intolerance. Throughout the pregnancy, women are advised to replace their regular meal schedule with frequent smaller portions to prevent overfilling their stomachs. The Common Causes Of Pregnancy Nausea Diarrhea

Nausea and vomiting are among the most common symptoms of pregnancy for most women. As many as 90 percent of pregnant women will experience some nausea, particularly during the first few months, while 25 to 55 percent will also experience vomiting. Together, these symptoms are known as morning sickness (even though they don’t just occur in the morning). But these are not the only uncomfortable physical conditions that pregnant women are likely to find themselves dealing with.

Constipation is a very common problem among pregnant women. And though it is much less frequently discussed, for many women pregnancy nausea diarrhea is also a problem during the first trimester and then again toward the end of the pregnancy. It’s estimated that up to 34 percent of pregnant women will have this problem.

The causes of diarrhea during pregnancy are quite varied. Sometimes it is traceable to the same things that cause diarrhea at any time—bacteria and infections, food poisoning, medications, lactose intolerance and pre-existing digestive tract problems, like irritable bowel syndrome. Being pregnant may lower your resistance to many of these agents. Many women also develop new or increased sensitivities to certain foods during pregnancy, contributing to both nausea and diarrhea.

Culprit number one, however, for diarrhea as for nausea, is likely to be the massive hormonal changes pregnancy introduces to a woman’s body, particularly the increase in progesterone and estrogen. Many women experience stomach and digestive maladies including diarrhea during their menstrual periods for the same reason. Heightened hormone levels can cause the muscles in the colon to relax, leading to diarrhea.

Because constipation is such a common complaint for pregnant women, they are often advised to adopt a variety of lifestyle changes that can lead to the opposite extreme and trigger episodes or a period of diarrhea. A pregnancy diet generally focuses on increasing high fiber foods, drinking extra fluids, and taking vitamin and mineral supplements All of these can contribute to diarrhea. Some prenatal vitamins also affect some women with diarrhea or loose stools, and a change of brand may eliminate the problem.

A few dietary adjustments are advisable to treat and prevent digestive problems—including both nausea and diarrhea—during pregnancy. If you find that in fact you seem to have a greater tendency to diarrhea than to constipation, skip the prune juice. Dried fruits, highly spiced and fatty foods, and even milk should be avoided, at least if you are lactose intolerant. Yogurt with live cultures is a great booster for the digestive system, and many bland, starchy items are on the list of things to try: potatoes, crackers, toast, etc. A special regime of bananas, rice, applesauce and toast (or BRAT) is frequently recommended as particularly easy to digest. Stick to cooked vegetables and lean meats, and avoid high-sugar drinks (even juice drinks). Many of these recommendations should also help reduce queasiness and nausea if you also experience those symptoms.

Diarrhea is generally more of a nuisance than a serious health concern for pregnant women. However, if it is severe or persistent (more than a couple of days), or if any blood or mucous appears in the stools, be sure to tell your doctor.

Do You Have Extreme Pregnancy Nausea?

So your pregnancy has turned out to be a much less enjoyable experience than you had imagined—right from the beginning! Sure, you’d heard about morning sickness, but that never sounded quite as awful as the extreme pregnancy nausea and vomiting that you’ve been suffering. And now your doctor has given you a diagnosis that sounds strange and even frightening: “Hyperemesis gravidarum.”

It might be a little less scary if you at least know what the name means. The medical term for the condition popularly known as morning sickness is “emesis gravidarum,” which is simply the Latin term for vomiting (emesis) that occurs during pregnancy (gravidarum). “Hyper” is a common prefix meaning extreme or intensified, as in hyperactive or hypertension. So hyper-emesis gravidarum is basically an extreme case of morning sickness.

What distinguishes hyperemesis gravidarum from regular morning sickness is a matter of degree, and there’s no clear-cut line separating them. What the doctor is looking at is how often are you vomiting? How long has it continued? Can you keep any food and liquids in your system long enough to get the nutrition you and the baby need? Have you lost weight? Have you become hypersensitive to sensory stimuli like odors or the taste of things?

One thing hyperemesis gravidarum does not mean is that you are somehow rejecting your fetus, either physically or emotionally. It also does not mean that you have any higher chance of miscarriage or other complications in your pregnancy. Children born to women who have extreme pregnancy nausea don’t appear to have any greater risk of birth defects. According to the Hyperemesis Research and Education (HER) Foundation, “Most studies examining the risks and outcomes for a pregnant woman with nausea and vomiting in pregnancy find no detrimental effects long-term for milder cases.”

On the other hand, if hyperemesis gravidarum is not recognized and treated appropriately, it can progress to more serious symptoms, include debilitating fatigue, gastric irritation, ketosis, and malnutrition. There is an important difference between hyperemesis that does not completely prevent food intake, and hyperemesis severe enough to cause significant weight loss. The second kind, although very rare, can require treatment with intravenous fluids for weeks or months.

The most basic problem is extreme dehydration caused by continuous vomiting and inability to replenish liquids. Hyperemesis gravidarum with extreme dehydration can lead to a host of ailments, including dizziness, headaches, extreme stress and inability to function normally, depression, and hallucinations.

So it’s important to determine as early as possible whether your nausea and vomiting are outside of the normal range and call for more aggressive care than garden-variety morning sickness. Medications, bed rest, IV fluids, and nutritional therapy are typically the most effective therapies. The HER Foundation found that bed rest and IV hydration were the two most beneficial treatments, but notes that each case needs to be evaluated independently. Standard anti-vomiting drugs are often ineffective. Allergy medicines can be helpful, and steroid therapy with prednisone has proven highly successful in many more severe cases where other treatment approaches have failed.

What Might Be The Cause Of Nausea During Pregnancy?

Most girls grow up dreaming of the day they will have children of their own, and when that time comes, the news that they are pregnant is joyful. The experience of being pregnant, on the other hand, can be considerably less than joyful at certain moments. For the 70 to 80 percent of women who suffer the nausea during pregnancy and/or vomiting of morning sickness, being pregnant can also be quite uncomfortable.

The exact cause of morning sickness hasn’t been identified, and there may be a number of factors that contribute to the symptoms—which is not surprising considering how many things are happening and changing within the expectant mother’s body during these nine months. Most of the blame for morning sickness is placed upon a variety of hormonal changes that accompany pregnancy.

Estrogen is the most familiar of the hormones involved. Of course all women have estrogen, which fluctuates constantly throughout the monthly menstrual cycle. It’s not uncommon for women to experience symptoms rather like morning sickness around the time of their monthly period. So the fact that estrogen increases dramatically in the body of a pregnant woman suggests that it is very likely one of the contributing causes of morning sickness. Progesterone levels also rise during pregnancy and have a muscle relaxant effect that is functional for the pregnant uterus, but may also extend to the stomach and digestive tract, contributing to a tendency for acid to build up. This can lead to acid reflux and nausea.

The third kind of hormone that may lie behind morning sickness is less familiar: human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG). HCG is only present during pregnancy; it is actually produced by the embryo and placenta and then released into the mother’s body. (This is the substance that pregnancy tests are looking for as a sure sign that conception has occurred.) HCG is linked to immune system development in mother and embryo, and stimulates increased production of progesterone that strengthens the mother’s uterus for carrying and nourishing the growing fetus.

Another target of speculation has been vitamin deficiency. Some women have found that supplemental doses of vitamin B6 seem to bring some relief from nausea, but the reason is not understood. The fact that it helps suggests that there may be a deficiency or increased need for B6 during pregnancy, but so far research has not supported this theory, since vitamin B6 levels appear to be effectively the same in women with and without morning sickness. Women who use multivitamins before and during the start of their pregnancy may also be less likely to have the symptoms of morning sickness.

Aside from hormone and vitamin levels, the pregnant woman’s body experiences a number of other changes that are likely to contribute to if not cause morning sickness. Many women experience a heightened awareness of and reaction to odors, which can evoke nausea and gagging. It’s not clear whether this is just another effect of the increased estrogen in the body. What Is The Cure To Morning Sickness?

There is no cure for morning sickness (don’t mean to disappoint you, however, keep reading)—that uncomfortable and disruptive queasiness, nausea, and vomiting that so often herald the “joyful event” that is pregnancy.

It cannot be cured because although it is a disorder, it is not really a disease.

In fact, some women never get morning sickness. Some women experience mild symptoms for a few weeks. Some women are sick for 3, 6 or even the whole 9 months. What happens to any particular individual seems to depend on a combination of factors—including genetics (morning sickness runs in families), and whether you are particularly susceptible to nausea in general. If you are prone to vertigo, motion sickness, or digestive disorders associated with nausea, you are probably much more likely to develop nausea during pregnancy. Having very highly developed taste buds or sensitivity to odors is also associated with the occurrence of nausea during pregnancy.

Nausea associated with pregnancy is believed to be caused by the increased levels of estrogen and progesterone and the introduction of a new hormone, hCG, in the mother’s body, which are all essential to the health and development of the fetus. These hormones protect the fetus directly and apparently trigger nausea and food aversions in the mother, possibly also for protective reasons. One increasingly popular view holds that temporary taste aversions and the inability to eat and keep down certain foods are actually the body’s way of preventing and eliminating potentially harmful substances in certain foods, particularly red meats and highly flavorful or spicy ingredients, from affecting both mother and child. Both the embryo and the expectant mother have lowered immune responses—in the child because the immune system is not yet fully developed, and in the mother to prevent her immune systems from rejecting the child. This view that morning sickness is protective is supported by the observation that women who suffer from pregnancy nausea are statistically less likely to experience miscarriages.

If the protective theory of morning sickness is right, then as long as the symptoms remains within a normal range and do not lead to malnutrition or dehydration, nausea and vomiting during pregnancy should probably be regarded as a normal and inevitable part of a healthy pregnancy.

But while morning sickness apparently cannot be and possibly should not be “cured,” it can very often be treated quite successfully to reduce its severity and interference with your ability to live and work normally during your pregnancy. The sensible goal for most pregnant women is not to “cure” but to “manage” morning sickness.

The basic guidelines for reducing pregnancy nausea include:

• Eat smaller meals more frequently, to reduce stress on the stomach and digestive tract.
• Keep some bland, dry foods, such as crackers and high-protein snacks, at hand to help settle the stomach, especially in the morning when you get up.
• Avoid foods that are very spicy or high in fat.
• If certain odors, foods or drinks (e.g. caffeine) make you nauseous, avoid them.
• If you have been taking iron supplements, discontinue them, as they are known to contribute to nausea.
• Drink small amounts of water and fluids that restore electrolytes and protein continually throughout the day.
• Rest in bed or lie down when you are tired or feel nauseous.

If these measures don’t significantly help your symptoms, there are a number of “alternative” treatments that are not completely proven but have some scientific support:

• Vitamin supplements—multivitamins or vitamin B6 specifically
• Ginger taken in food, liquid infusions, or ground ginger capsules.
• Acupressure and/or acustimulation of a point on the wrist known as the P6 point. Several different types of wristbands are available.

In extreme and persistent cases, pregnancy nausea can lead to dehydration and nutritional deficiencies that require medical treatment, including anti-emetic drugs, bed rest, hospitalization, and IV fluids. But for the majority of women, the best approach is to understand why your body is behaving this way and how you can best accommodate your morning sickness while it lasts, rather than hoping to cure it.
